German Week At FSU October 10-13

German Week at FSU from October 10. – 13., 2017

Wars, natural disasters, poverty, and political and environmental factors force millions of human beings to flee their homes and seek personal and economic safety in foreign and not always hospitable countries. Under the title “Germany: Making Choices” Campus Week 2017, the German program of the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics at FSU organizes a series of events that address the German and American responses to this crisis.

The Week features an exhibition entitled “Germany: Integrating Immigrants” at the Center for Global Engagement (CGE). It starts on October 10 at 10:00 am and closes on October 13.

On October 10, a German Advising Day informs students about opportunities of German study at FSU and abroad from 11:00 am-1:00 pm in the same location.

On October 12, everyone is invited to the CGE to a roundtable in which distinguished scholars and experts discuss the topic of “Integrating Refugees” from 4:00 till 6:00 pm. The roundtable is organized in partnership with the CGE’s “Engage Your World” series. Following it at 8:00 pm, the Askew Student Life Cinema screens the feature film “Meteor Street” (Germany 2016, with English subtitles) in the presence of the director Aline Fischer. The movie tells the story of two Palestinian brothers who live as refugees in Berlin, Germany.

The Week closes on October 13 at 10:00 am at the CGE with an award ceremony for the winners of the undergraduate essay contest “Integrating Refugees in Germany and World-Wide.”

All events are free and open to the public. The German Week is sponsored by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Washington DC, the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics, the Center of Global Engagement, the Winthrop-King Institute, and the German Academic Exchange Service DAAD.
