Tianjin summer courses

Each student on the FSU Tianjin Program may take a maximum of three courses and a minimum of two courses. The Program offers courses in three tracks: Track One is for all students who want to learn Chinese; Track Two is for business majors, or students in Chinese major with business concentration;Track Three is for engineering students. Select your courses following the advisement below:

I. Track One (Chinese language):

Each student in this track will register for three courses: "CHT 3391 Chinese Culture," plus Two language courses appropriate to his/her level of Chinese proficiency:

  • If you have never studied Chinese before, register for: 
    1) "CHI 1120 Elementary Chinese I." 
    2) "CHI 1110 Elementary Conversational Chinese" 
  • If you are presently in "CHI 1120 Elementary Chinese I" or have taken one semester of Chinese, register for:
    1) "CHI 1121 Elementary Chinese II." 
    2) "CHI 1110 Elementary Conversational Chinese" 
  • If you are presently in "CHI 1121 Elementary Chinese II," or have taken two semesters of Chinese, register for: 
    1) "CHI 2220 Intermediate Chinese."
    2) "CHI 2240 Intermediate Conversational Chinese."
  • If you are presently in "CHI 2220 Intermediate Chinese," or have taken three semesters of Chinese, register for:
    1) "CHI 3501 Chinese Short Stories and Essays."
    2) "CHI 2240 Intermediate Conversational Chinese."
  • If you are presently in "CHI 3420 Chinese Grammar and Composition," or have taken four semesters of Chinese, register for:
    1) "CHI 3501 Chinese Short Stories and Essays."
    2) "CHI 4930 Topics in Chinese Conversation."
  • If you have completed courses on and above "CHI 3501," register for:
    1) "CHI 4503 Readings in Chinese History".
    2) "CHI 4930 Topics in Chinese Conversation."

II. Track Two (business):

Each student in this track will register for three courses with two options:

  • Option one: two business courses plus "CHT 3391 Chinese Culture."
  • Option two: one business course, one language course (except for Chinese Conversation course), plus "CHT 3391 Chinese Culture."

III. Track Three (engineering):

Each student in this track will register for three courses with two options:

  • Option one: two engineering courses plus "CHT 3391 Chinese Culture."
  • Option two: one engineering course, one language course (except for Chinese Conversation course), plus "CHT 3391 Chinese Culture."

Courses Credits Description

CHI 1120 Elementary Chinese I

4 This course is for students with no previous knowledge of Chinese. By introducing students to basic knowledge of Chinese pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary, it helps students to lay a good foundation for further studying this language or fulfilling language requirement at FSU.

CHI 1121 Elementary Chinese II

4 As a follow-up course to CHI 1120, this "Elementary II" course further consolidates as well as expands students’ grasp of elementary-level Chinese skills in reading and writing and prepares them for study on the next level.
CHI 1110 Elementary Conversational Chinese 3 This course introduces students to basic conversational Chinese, enabling them to develop interpretive and communicative skills in Chinese at the elementary level and grasp rudimentary knowledge of social customs and cultural practices in Chinese-speaking communities.

CHI 2220 Intensive Chinese Level II

4 This course continues to develop the four basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in Chinese by introducing grammar, vocabulary, and sentence patterns adequate for second-year Chinese.
CHI 2243 Intermediate Conversational Chinese 3 This conversational course helps students to further develop their listening and speaking skills in Chinese at the intermediate level. Students learn to properly interpret spoken and written texts and efficiently communicate with Chinese speakers on matters in everyday settings.

CHI 3501 Chinese Short Stories & Essays

3 This course focuses on reading and writing at the high intermediate level, and also helps to develop proficiency in listening and speaking and a good awareness of contemporary Chinese culture.

CHI 4503 Readings in Chinese History

3 This upper-level language course enhances the comprehensive language skills of students who have taken Chinese language courses for three years or have acquired equivalent language ability.  By increasing vocabulary extensively, students will enhance their skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing to an advanced level. 

CHI 4930 Topics in Chinese Conversation

3 This conversation course is for students who want to improve their oral communication skills in Chinese adequate to the advanced-low and advance-mid levels. In addition to obtaining sophisticated skills in interpreting spoken and written texts, the course also helps students to prepare and deliver presentations on sociocultural topics.
CHT 3391 Chinese Culture 3 This course is required of all students in this program. It introduces students to major topics in Chinese culture from a historical perspective and helps to enhance students' understanding of the major sites of excursions.
