Martin Munro awarded the 2019 Visiting International Fellowship by the Society for French Studies

The Society for French Studies is delighted to announce that the 2019 Visiting International Fellowship has been awarded to Martin Munro, Winthrop-King Professor of French and Francophone Studies and Director of the Winthrop-King Institute for Contemporary French and Francophone Studies at Florida State University. Professor Munro’s research interests are in the literature and culture of the Francophone Caribbean, ecocriticism and the writing of disaster in the Caribbean, postcolonial theory, and literary translation. The aim of Professor Munro’s fellowship will be to enhance the visibility of Francophone Caribbean French Studies through collaboration with a range of university partners and other organisations.

The Fellowship is scheduled to take place from 1 to 20 March 2020. Queen’s University Belfast will be lead host, in partnership with the universities of Liverpool and Glasgow, University College, Cork, and the International Slavery Museum, Liverpool.

Details of the planned activities are as follows:

  • QUB: teaching contributions on UG and PG programmes in French & Francophone Studies and Translation Studies; career development workshops with PGR and PGT students; flagship conference on Caribbean history and culture (precise theme to be confirmed)
  • Liverpool: day conference at the International Museum of Slavery on Professor Munro’s work on Haiti and the French Caribbean, with plenary lecture by Professor Munro
  • Glasgow: teaching contributions at UG level, guest lectures at the university and the Alliance Française
  • UCC: research seminar and teaching contributions; regional outreach event on Francophone culture to include participation of Guadeloupean singer Ines Khai
  • The fellowship will also include a travelling exhibition on Haitian literature and culture, to be housed in temporary exhibition space in university libraries.
